The Liberian-flagged tanker near Sochi was attacked by a maritime drone, according to Russian transport authorities. All 23 Indian crew members were rescued, while the fire at sea had not yet been fully extinguished.
Russian transport authorities reported on Wednesday that the tanker had been hit by an unmanned vessel. As a result, the oil on board caught fire and, according to the authorities, a large plume of smoke formed off the coast of Sochi. The attack has not been independently verified.
According to Russia, all the crew members were Indian. They were evacuated and, as far as has been reported, there were no casualties among those on board. Ukraine has not responded to the accusation that it carried out a drone attack.
Authorities in the nearby federal territory of Sirius restricted access to beaches. Russian officials said air and water quality were being monitored. At the start of Wednesday, no independent information was yet available on the extent of any oil pollution or the condition of the tanker.
The incident follows earlier attacks on commercial vessels in and around the Black Sea. Both Russia and Ukraine regularly accuse each other of attacks on shipping. This makes it difficult to establish the origin of a drone when no independent investigation or footage with a verifiable location is available.
For shipping companies and crews, the incident increases uncertainty over routes along the Russian and Ukrainian coasts. The Black Sea remains important for flows of oil, grain and other goods. Further attacks could lead to diversions, higher insurance costs or temporary restrictions for ports and coastal areas.
The earlier report concerned a tanker on fire and closed beaches. The new development is Russia’s attribution of the incident to a maritime drone and confirmation that the entire crew was rescued. Who was responsible and how much oil was released remain under investigation.
