Jaguar returns with electric Type 01
The British manufacturer unveils a luxury electric four-door car to be built from 2027.
Jaguar has unveiled its first production car on a dedicated electric platform in New York. The Type 01 is intended to reposition the British luxury brand after Jaguar spent two years focusing on a far-reaching brand overhaul.
The Type 01 is a fully electric four-door GT. Jaguar Land Rover says the model will be designed, developed and built in the United Kingdom. Production is due to begin in Solihull in 2027.
Components will be made at several British locations. Electric drive units and battery packs will, according to JLR, come from Wolverhampton, while pressed body panels will be produced in Halewood. This links the new car to the company’s British industrial network.
JLR gives a usable battery capacity of 118 kilowatt-hours and an estimated range of up to 400 miles according to the US EPA method. The company stresses that these are provisional factory figures and that the final values will still depend on homologation and operating conditions.
Orders are due to open at the beginning of 2027. JLR gives a starting price of £130,000. First deliveries are expected in the second half of 2027. With Jaguar, the company wants to serve a different part of the luxury market from Range Rover, Defender and Discovery.
The launch is important for a brand that faced substantial criticism after introducing its new visual identity. Jaguar previously withdrew existing models from sale to make room for a new generation of cars. The Type 01 is the first concrete product to make that direction visible.
