Arson halts rail services between Rotterdam and Delft
Damaged cables and installations mean no trains will run between Rotterdam Centraal and Delft Campus on Saturday.
Arson at a railway bridge in Rotterdam-Delfshaven has halted rail services between Rotterdam and Delft on Saturday. ProRail is investigating the damage; police are investigating who started the fire.
At around 02.30, a fault was reported at a railway bridge in Rotterdam-Delfshaven. A contractor found smouldering cables there and saw that an access door to a technical room had been cut open. According to ProRail, this was arson and therefore deliberate. Nothing is yet known about a possible perpetrator or motive.
The damage affects the route between Rotterdam Centraal and Delft Campus. ProRail initially expected trains to be unable to run for the rest of Saturday. The latest disruption information said on Saturday morning that the restriction would last at least until 02.15 on Sunday. Passengers were advised to check their journey again shortly before departure.
Several intercity and sprinter services have also been affected. These include trains between The Hague and Rotterdam, Amsterdam and Vlissingen, Amsterdam and Roosendaal, and Venlo and Dordrecht. Replacement buses are running only on a limited basis between Delft, Schiedam Centrum and Rotterdam, meaning passengers should allow for longer journey times.
The exact extent of the damage has not yet been established. ProRail warns that damage to cables and technical installations is not always immediately visible. The police and fire service must first carry out their investigation. The contractor can then determine which components need to be replaced and when the railway can safely be reopened.
The disruption is therefore more than a temporary fire report: part of an important rail link will remain out of service for as long as the investigation and repairs continue. ProRail has provided no information about previous similar incidents at this location. It is also not known whether the arson is connected to a wider pattern. The journey planner and the rail infrastructure manager are issuing new information about repairs and the resumption of rail services.
