The first footage of the new animated series based on De Fabeltjeskrant appeared online on Monday. The series is being developed under the working title Fable News. No Dutch broadcaster or firm release date has yet been announced.
The makers of De Fabeltjeskrant published the first teaser for the new animated series on Monday. In the international version, the project is called Daily Fable News. Meneer de Uil returns as newsreader and narrator in the familiar Grote Dierenbos universe.
According to Marketing Report, the announced series consists of 26 episodes of approximately 11 minutes. The production is aimed at children aged 6 to 12, but is also intended for parents and other viewers familiar with the original series. The new episodes will be animated and therefore do not mark a return of the old puppet production.
Alongside the new series, the original episodes are being made available again. The official De Fabeltjeskrant website states that more than 1,600 episodes have been digitised and technically enhanced. The episodes are being offered worldwide free of charge via an official YouTube channel.
Robin de Levita Productions, Monks and JVDB Studios are involved in the project. The archive material comes from the Beeld en Geluid collection. The initiative therefore combines cultural heritage with new animation technology and a distribution model that initially relies heavily on online video.
The teaser is being released during MIPCOM, the television and streaming trade fair in Cannes. The producers hope to attract international buyers there. No sale to a broadcaster or streaming service has yet been announced; nor is it known when the full series will be released to the public.
For now, the return is therefore mainly news about development and distribution. The original series was first broadcast in 1968 and grew into a recognisable Dutch children's programme. Whether the new animation will occupy the same place in the media landscape depends on the final episodes, partners and viewers.
