The disruption at hosting provider Versio has already lasted more than two weeks and was caused, according to the company, by an unknown vulnerability. Websites and email remain available, but customers still cannot use their control panel normally.
Versio told Tweakers on Monday that the problem stems from a vulnerability in its own IT environment. The company says it has brought in external cybersecurity specialists and, as a precaution, informed the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens and the Nationaal Cyber Security Centrum.
According to Versio, the forensic investigation has now been completed. It is said to show that customer environments were not affected by the incident. The provider therefore says there are no indications that customer data was stolen. That conclusion comes from Versio itself and has not been independently verified publicly.
The customer panel has been partly unusable for some customers since 25 September. As a result, customers are mainly unable to manage DNS records. This may be necessary, for example, to point a website to another server or resolve a disruption themselves.
Versio has set up a temporary route through customer services. Staff are said to be handling requests as a priority, but customers report that this sometimes takes several days. The provider emphasises that websites, domains and email have remained available throughout the disruption.
The incident is now registered as resolved on the official status page. At the same time, Versio says there that self-service in the customer panel is still unavailable and that customer services are carrying out changes manually for the time being. The two notices therefore describe different parts of the same incident.
No permanent solution has yet been announced. In a message to customers, Versio writes that further information on progress will follow in two weeks. The company does not say why the vulnerability is not being disclosed; it refers to the security of the company and its customers.
For customers, the situation mainly means less control over their own hosting environment. There is no indication that all websites are offline or that a data breach has been established, but the limited service may have operational consequences for businesses. Versio has provided no public timetable for a full recovery.
