SpaceX and Tesla have formed special committees to investigate a possible merger. Chief executive Elon Musk calls a combination a good idea, while according to AP he warns that an agreement is neither certain nor imminent.
Musk announced the committees on Tuesday during a conference call on SpaceX's quarterly results. According to Reuters, they consist of independent directors who must discuss whether the two companies can merge. Musk says he will not take part in the talks himself because of his position at both companies.
No merger proposal has yet been submitted for approval and no agreement has been announced. AP quotes Musk warning that it would be an exaggeration to regard a merger as certain. The announcement therefore mainly means that a formal investigation into the possibility has begun.
According to AP, SpaceX reported a profit of $4.4 billion on revenue of $14.6 billion for the third quarter. Revenue was 161 per cent higher than a year earlier. According to the news agency, growth came mainly from satellite communications and artificial intelligence; Starlink remained the biggest source of profit.
The companies operate in different markets. Tesla makes electric cars and energy products, while SpaceX is involved in rocket launches, satellite communications and space travel. A merger would expose investors to all those activities at once. According to Reuters, SpaceX shares rose by about 8 per cent in after-hours trading; AP reported a rise of 7.5 per cent.
A combination would also raise complex questions about governance and conflicts of interest, as Musk runs both companies. Those questions must be assessed by independent directors and ultimately by shareholders and regulators. The announced committees have not yet made a decision and no timetable for any potential transaction is known.
