The Manja low-pressure system is bringing stormy weather to northern Germany on Sunday. The German weather service expects heavy gusts along the coast and in some elevated areas, with locally hurricane-force gusts on the islands.
According to Tagesschau, the outer bands of a storm depression are moving from the North Sea across northern Germany. Heavy storm-force or hurricane-force gusts are possible, particularly along the coasts of Schleswig-Holstein and Lower Saxony. Hamburg, Bremen and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania will also face stormy winds.
Around the Brocken and near Wernigerode, winds may strengthen to around 130 kilometres per hour, according to the German weather service. Heavy rain is also expected inland. The warnings apply to various areas from Saturday evening until Sunday evening.
A separate weather report from UBIMET says the front had already reached western Germany during the night. On Sunday, the rain will move eastwards, followed by showers from the North Sea. Conditions will remain unsettled along the coast throughout the day.
The storm is part of a series of autumn depressions over the North Sea. The reports describe current weather conditions and not a long-term measurement of climate change. These sources do not show whether the storm is exceptional in climatic terms.
The consequences for the Netherlands are mainly relevant to coastal areas and shipping and traffic on the North Sea. The German sources consulted provide no specific warning for the Netherlands; Dutch travellers and businesses should therefore follow notices from the KNMI and Rijkswaterstaat.
From Monday, winds will gradually ease according to German forecasts, although heavy gusts may remain possible along the North Sea coast. No notably bad weather is expected in most of Germany on Tuesday.
