The new foldable iPhone Duo appears difficult to repair when its inner screen or hinge fails, according to repair researchers. During a teardown, iFixit also discovered possible weak points that could be linked to reports of cracked screens.
iFixit examined the inside of Apple's first foldable iPhone shortly after its launch. The repair specialist saw that some users had reported cracks and bright lines along the fold of the inner screen early on. Apple has not confirmed that there is a structural problem or that a specific production batch is affected.
During the teardown, iFixit focused mainly on the hinge and how the screen is supported there. According to the researchers, various components in the hinge may affect the forces exerted on the thin screen as it is opened and closed. That is a possible explanation, not a proven cause of the reported faults.
Dust also received attention. During the test, several particles penetrated as far as the moving hinge, even though the device is protected against dust and water under its stated IP68 rating. iFixit calls the result encouraging compared with other foldable phones, but warns that dust in moving parts can still cause problems. A direct link to the screen damage has not been established.
The device's repairability score initially came to five out of ten. According to iFixit, that is the highest score it has given a foldable smartphone. The battery can be disconnected relatively easily and the outer screen can be removed without major damage. The inner screen module and the hinge, however, make repairs complicated.
For users, the price of a faulty inner screen is particularly relevant. iFixit writes that replacement outside the warranty costs 999 dollars; the Dutch price may differ. The company has also published a repair guide, but not all replacement parts were available during the investigation.
The findings are not an independent long-term durability test and say nothing about the frequency of faults among all users. According to iFixit, Apple is currently offering replacement devices to some customers, but has not yet issued a public technical explanation. It therefore remains unclear whether this involves incidental damage, a design risk or a problem that could later be mitigated through parts or software.

The core is based on iFixit's recent teardown and an independent discussion of it. Possible causes and the scale of the damage are presented as uncertain.
- confirmed iFixit initially gave the iPhone Duo five out of ten for repairability. — Mentioned in the iFixit investigation. source
- confirmed Dust penetrated as far as the hinge and may affect moving parts there. — Observation from the test; the link to screen damage remains unproven. source
- confirmed Apple has not confirmed a cause of the screen problems. — The reporting consulted contains no official technical explanation from Apple. source
- confirmed Replacing the inner screen costs 999 dollars outside the warranty. — Amount cited by iFixit; local prices may differ. source
Editor's note
The teardown, the provisional repairability score and the observed dust ingress are certain. The possible cause of the screen damage and the scale of the problem have not been confirmed by Apple.Sources
