Anthropic has filed a registration statement for a flotation in the United States. The size and price have not yet been determined, but the move could become an important test of how companies investing billions in generative AI are valued.
Anthropic filed a registration statement with the US Securities and Exchange Commission on Monday. It concerns a proposed offering of ordinary shares; how many shares will be issued and at what price is not yet known.
According to Associated Press, the company behind the Claude chatbot is growing rapidly but is not yet profitable. Associated Press reports that Anthropic recorded more than $16 billion in revenue in the first half of 2026. During the same period, the company suffered a substantial loss, which also included a significant accounting charge.
The registration for the flotation could give investors insight into the costs of training and using large AI models. Anthropic says in the filing that further growth may require substantial investment in computing power, infrastructure and staff.
Notably, the company also describes the risks of its own technology in the prospectus. These include the possibility that advanced models may display harmful behaviour or prove harder to control. Such warnings are not evidence that a specific model has displayed this behaviour; they are risks the company is presenting to potential investors.
The flotation could also affect competition between Anthropic, OpenAI and other AI companies. Public shareholders may look not only at revenue growth, but also at when the companies might become profitable and how much capital will continue to be needed for data centres and chips.
The registration is not yet a definitive stock-market listing. The US regulator must assess the documents, and Anthropic may still change the timing, size or terms. Nor has the valuation speculated about in reports been fixed.

One story, several perspectives
What is established
- Anthropic has filed an S-1 registration for a proposed flotation.
- The company reports strong revenue growth, but also substantial losses and significant investment needs.
- In the registration, Anthropic describes potential risks of advanced AI, including unpredictable or harmful model behaviour.
Left
Arguments A left-wing approach will stress that private AI companies cannot place societal risks entirely on shareholders or the market. It will call for strong public rules, labour and environmental standards, and oversight before additional capital accelerates development.
Values Collective safety, public control, protection of workers and limiting concentrations of power.
Consequences Without regulation, the costs of energy, labour, privacy and societal harm could, from this perspective, be shifted on to society.
Centre
Arguments An institutional approach will assess the flotation on the basis of transparency, oversight and financial sustainability. It will allow room for innovation, but demand that risks, capital requirements and governance be verifiable.
Values A balance between innovation, consumer protection, market forces and responsible governance.
Consequences Clear reporting and phased rules could enable investment without forcing regulators to respond retrospectively to problems.
Right
Arguments A right-wing approach will stress that private investors and competition can accelerate innovation and that companies themselves should bear responsibility for their products. It may warn that heavy regulation weakens American and European companies against state-backed competitors.
Values Entrepreneurship, property rights, technological progress and limited government intervention.
Consequences Too many rules can hold back investment, product development and economic growth; too little market responsibility, on the other hand, can destroy trust and capital.
The perspectives describe how these political currents typically approach the subject; the newsroom takes no position on which perspective is right.
