Intel shares fell by about 30 per cent on Friday after the chipmaker warned of weak PC demand and high investment costs. The fall dragged other chip companies lower and heightened concerns about the financial returns from global AI investment.
Intel reported on Thursday, with its quarterly results, that expected quarterly revenue was more than one billion dollars below market expectations. The company also said it no longer expected positive cash flow for the whole of 2026, according to Reuters.
The warning came shortly after Intel had stressed that demand from data centres remained strong. The new message shows that this growth does not automatically outweigh the costs of investing in production capacity, AI infrastructure and addressing problems in the PC market.
According to Reuters, Intel lost around 30 per cent of its market value on Friday, putting the company at risk of its biggest one-day share-price fall ever. Shares in AMD, Arm, Qualcomm, Nvidia, Broadcom and Micron, among others, also fell.
According to Reuters, the concerns extend beyond Intel, with investors asking whether the billions that technology companies are spending on data centres and specialised chips will generate returns quickly enough. Amazon contributed to that uncertainty, according to Reuters, with a large cash outflow and plans for further capital expenditure.
Global equity markets consequently came under pressure. Reuters reported a fall of more than one per cent in MSCI’s world index on Friday, while investors moved into US government bonds.
A fall in the share price does not in itself mean that Intel is technically or financially on the verge of collapse. At the end of September, the company had 21.84 billion dollars in cash and cash equivalents, compared with 46.32 billion dollars in long-term debt. The market reacted mainly to the combination of weaker prospects, high spending and uncertainty over the payback period for AI investments.
