South Korea’s share market fell sharply on Friday as technology companies suffered losses. Investors fear that high investment in artificial intelligence will deliver returns more slowly than hoped.

The Kospi index was down more than 5 per cent in morning trading, according to Yonhap. Large chip companies were particularly under pressure. The Korea Exchange also temporarily activated a so-called sidecar, briefly halting programme trading during exceptionally sharp movements.

The decline followed losses in US technology shares. Investors are once again examining the relationship between the high valuations of AI companies and the profits that the investments may ultimately generate.

South Korea is particularly sensitive to a shift in sentiment surrounding AI. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix are among the leading producers of memory chips used in data centres and AI systems.

A fall in share prices does not automatically mean that demand for chips or AI infrastructure is collapsing. The price decline alone does not show what role disappointing prospects, higher financing costs or concerns about recouping AI expenditure are playing.

The development could also have consequences beyond South Korea, as chip companies worldwide are connected through supply chains and investment plans. The market reaction was still under way at the time of reporting.

The market decline and temporary sidecar were reported directly by Yonhap. The explanation concerning AI returns was clearly presented as an investor concern, not as an established fact.
