South Korea’s stock market fell sharply on Tuesday amid fresh concerns about the scale and returns of investments in artificial intelligence. Samsung Electronics and memory-chipmaker SK hynix were among the biggest decliners.
The Kospi was down 2.48 per cent at 5,714.06 points at around 11.20am local time, Yonhap news agency reported. According to Yonhap, the index opened 2.46 per cent lower. The agency mainly linked the decline to technology companies and concerns about AI investment.
Samsung Electronics fell 2.95 per cent and SK hynix declined 3.8 per cent. Investors fear, according to Yonhap, that huge spending on AI infrastructure will rise faster for the time being than the profits companies can generate from it. Such concerns can make chipmakers’ share prices sensitive to shifts in expectations.

| Fall | |

| Kospi | -2.48% |
| Samsung Electronics | -2.95% |
| SK hynix | -3.80% |
The move forms part of a broader decline in technology shares. According to AP News, the Nasdaq lost 1.07 per cent on Monday and the S&P 500 fell 0.51 per cent. AP News reported that Taiwan’s Taiex fell 0.9 per cent in Asia. The news agency also reported that Hong Kong’s Hang Seng, by contrast, rose 0.3 per cent, while the Shanghai Composite lost 0.7 per cent.
South Korea’s stock market also responded to uncertainty surrounding the US midterm elections, which are taking place on Tuesday. Yonhap additionally cited fears that high investment in AI could put technology companies’ profitability under pressure in the short term. That is a market interpretation, not an established conclusion about future demand for chips.
The decline also says little about the companies’ current turnover. A lower share price reflects changed investor expectations and is not a direct figure for production, exports or profits. AP reported that Samsung and SK hynix had still gained ground on Monday, showing how quickly sentiment can turn in this sector.
For Dutch companies, the development is mainly relevant through the international chip supply chain and financial markets. South Korea is a major producer of memory chips used in data centres, smartphones and other electronics. A sustained correction could affect investment plans and valuations, but these share-price falls alone do not demonstrate a structural decline in demand for chips.

Both sides of the figures
▲ Bright spots
- According to the sources, South Korea’s chip sector remains an important engine of the market; the decline mainly concerns valuations and expectations.
- The Kospi reflected a stock-market level, not a new production figure, so the price movement is not a direct measure of demand for chips.
▼ Concerns
- The Kospi fell 2.48 per cent intraday and SK hynix 3.8 per cent, according to Yonhap.
- Investors fear that AI investment could put technology companies’ short-term profitability under pressure.
Critical note
The figures are snapshots of the stock market and do not directly say how many chips companies are selling or how much profit they are making. These share-price falls alone do not demonstrate a structural decline in global demand for AI.
Who notices what
- Businesses
- Changing valuations could lead producers and customers in the chip supply chain to make more cautious investment decisions.
- Investors
- Technology and chip shares move sharply on expectations about the returns from AI investment.
- Households
- The direct effects on Dutch consumers are not yet visible; any impact would come through electronics, technology and investment markets.
