South Korean shares fell sharply on Thursday, particularly those of companies in the chip sector. Investors fear that the Democratic majority in the US Congress will make it more difficult to build new AI data centres.

The Kospi was down 3.27 per cent at 5,498.03 points at 11.20am local time, Yonhap reported. According to Yonhap, the index opened 1.82 per cent lower. Selling pressure was particularly strong among semiconductor stocks, Yonhap said, because the election result changed expectations about US AI policy.

US stock markets themselves rose on Wednesday. According to AP, the S&P 500 gained 1.6 per cent and the Dow Jones rose by more than 1,500 points. The reaction in Asia was therefore not universally negative: markets with less exposure to AI chips actually rose.

Samsung Electronics fell 5.7 per cent and SK Hynix 7.4 per cent, according to AP. The companies supply memory chips widely used in data centres. Investors appear to be reacting mainly to the possibility that permits, power use or other requirements for US data centres will become stricter.

The market move is not evidence that new US rules have already been introduced. Both AP and Yonhap describe the regulation as an expectation among investors. If the Democrats gain control of both chambers of Congress after the midterms, they could influence legislation. Which rules will actually be introduced and when remains uncertain.

For Dutch companies, the broader significance is particularly relevant. European chip suppliers, data-centre builders and technology companies could be indirectly affected if US investment slows. A single trading day cannot show how demand for computing power or the revenues of AI companies will develop.

Both sides of the figures
▲ Bright spots
  • The S&P 500 rose 1.6 per cent and the Dow Jones by more than 1,500 points after the US election result, according to AP.
▼ Concerns
  • The Kospi fell 3.27 per cent; Samsung Electronics lost 5.7 per cent and SK Hynix 7.4 per cent, according to Yonhap and AP.
Critical note

The market reaction measures expectations, not realised revenue or investment. The feared US AI rules do not yet exist as a concrete adopted package, so the fall is not a direct measure of actual demand for chips.

Who notices what
Investors
Chip and AI shares are moving sharply on expectations about US regulation and investment.
Businesses
Suppliers may face greater uncertainty about the timing of data-centre projects.
Workers
The share-price movement says nothing yet about direct effects on jobs; information about concrete corporate decisions would be needed for that.
Where economists disagree

The sources used show no demonstrable disagreement between economists or institutions about the cause; they mainly describe the market interpretation.

Every point comes from the article’s sources and was included in the fact check.

One story, several perspectives
What is established
  • The Democratic Party secured control of both chambers of the US Congress.
  • The Kospi fell sharply on Thursday morning.
  • Investors linked the fall to concerns about future US AI policy.
Centre

Arguments The institutional approach seeks rules that enable innovation while regulating permits, energy use and safety predictably.

Values Technological development, legal certainty and proportionate regulation.

Consequences A stable framework could reduce uncertainty for investors, even if individual projects take longer.

Right

Arguments A right-wing approach warns that stricter rules could damage America’s competitive position and the construction of crucial infrastructure.

Values Economic growth, innovation and limited government intervention.

Consequences From this perspective, delays could affect chip producers, data-centre builders and users of AI services.

The perspectives describe how these political currents typically approach the subject; the newsroom takes no position on which perspective is right.

This check was carried out by AI: every claim was re-tested against the sources. Even an approved article can contain errors — stay critical.

The share-price figures, company declines and US market movements were checked directly with AP and Yonhap. The possible regulation is described as an investor expectation, not as established policy.

Editor's note
The share-price falls and percentages cited have been confirmed by AP and Yonhap. The link to stricter AI rules is a market interpretation described by the sources, not an established policy decision.
