At least eight flights to and from Prague Airport were hit by bomb threats on Friday. One of the aircraft involved was bound for the Netherlands, the airport reported via ANP and AFP; no explosives have been found so far.
Czech police received reports about several aircraft that were due to land at or depart from Václav Havel Airport Prague. The airport said eight flights were involved in the threats. The available reporting does not specify which Dutch flight or airline was involved.
The airport says no explosives were found. According to ANP, which cites Reuters, a Wizz Air flight from Prague to Rome was diverted to Venice after a bomb threat was received. The airport also reported that air traffic in Prague had not been halted and that there had been no general cancellations.
According to EenVandaag and ANP, bomb threats were also made against other European passenger flights. EenVandaag reported on Thursday evening that there had already been eight bomb threats involving European flights that week, without explosives being found. On Friday, ANP also reported threats involving flights in Lisbon and again at Copenhagen Airport.
For passengers, a threat does not automatically mean that a flight will be cancelled. Airlines, airport security and police assess which safety measures are necessary for each aircraft. A plane may be searched, diverted or taken to another airport, even when the risk later proves to be low.
The Czech authorities have not identified a perpetrator or motive in the sources consulted. Nor has it been established whether all the threats came from the same source. It is therefore too early to attribute the series to a specific state, organisation or coordinated campaign. The immediate consequences are mainly delays and additional security procedures, while the investigation into the threats continues.
