Albert Heijn expects to gradually resume home deliveries from Friday 23 October. Parent company Ahold Delhaize says Albert Heijn’s website and app are available again, while the investigation into the cyberattack continues.
Ahold Delhaize published an update on the incident that affected the group’s digital systems earlier this month. The company says Albert Heijn’s website and app are back online. It expects to resume deliveries in stages from Friday.
The incident also affects Etos and Gall & Gall. A statement from Albert Heijn says the three Dutch chains have been dealing with a cybersecurity incident since Sunday afternoon, 11 October. The company says it has taken measures to protect the IT environment and restore systems in a controlled manner.
Ahold Delhaize says it informed the Dutch authorities within 24 hours of discovering malicious activity. The group says it is remaining in contact with the National Cyber Security Centre, law-enforcement agencies and other regulators.
The company has not yet provided a full picture of the scale of the damage or the precise nature of the attack. Earlier reports mentioned possible lost revenue of up to €150 million, but Ahold Delhaize has not confirmed that figure in the public company updates consulted for this article. We therefore do not treat it as an established figure.
For customers, the latest update means that online ordering is possible again, but deliveries and availability are not yet immediately back to their previous levels everywhere. The company is not warning of a general closure of shops; according to the statements, the problems are mainly affecting digital systems, logistical processes and online services.
The incident shows how heavily supermarket companies depend on digital infrastructure. An attack can affect online shops, delivery planning, stock management and communication with customers, even when physical shops remain open. For suppliers and logistics partners, a partial recovery may also temporarily mean different schedules and volumes.
The resumption on Friday is the company’s expectation, not a guarantee that all systems will have been fully restored by then. The investigation into the attack is ongoing. At the time of writing, it has also not been established whether customer or employee data were stolen.
