Ahold Delhaize shut down systems on Monday after a security incident within its network. The shops remain open, but online ordering and delivery are temporarily unavailable at Albert Heijn and the affiliated sister companies involved.
The group reported on Monday morning that it was taking measures to investigate the network and limit further problems. Some systems were taken offline as a precaution. Ahold Delhaize does not describe it as an ordinary technical fault, but as a security problem within its own infrastructure.
At Albert Heijn, the website and app are not normally available. Etos and Gall & Gall, which like Albert Heijn are part of Ahold Delhaize, are also experiencing problems. According to public reports, customers cannot currently place online orders or have them delivered.
The physical shops are open and the tills are working, according to the company. However, electronic price labels in the shops may still show old promotional prices. The current price will be applied at checkout. The company has urged customers to keep their receipts if personal discounts have not been processed correctly.
Loyalty features and personal offers are also temporarily limited. The Bonuskaart may be visible in the app without the rest of the content loading. As a result, customers cannot always see or automatically use their personal discounts in advance.
Ahold Delhaize has not disclosed the cause of the incident. Nor has the company said whether unauthorised parties accessed personal data. This does not mean that a data breach has been ruled out; the available information only says that the scale and cause have not yet been made public.
The disruption shows how heavily supermarket chains have come to depend on digital systems for logistics, customer service, loyalty programmes and price communication. By deliberately shutting down systems, a company can try to prevent further damage, but this has immediate consequences for customers and shops. On Monday, it was not yet known when the services would be fully restored.
