The websites and apps of Albert Heijn, Etos and Gall & Gall were still unavailable on Tuesday after an IT incident that began on Sunday. Online ordering and various loyalty schemes are also not working, while the shops and till systems remain open.
Ahold Delhaize, the parent company of the three retail chains, said on Monday that it was investigating a security problem in its network. As a precaution, the company took systems offline to protect the digital environment. Albert Heijn itself refers to an IT incident; no cause or attacker has been disclosed.
The measure mainly affects services outside the physical shop. Websites, apps and customer services are unreachable. The logistics systems have been temporarily disabled, meaning groceries ordered online are not being delivered. Orders from Etos and Gall & Gall may also be affected as a result, although the company has provided no separate figures on the scale.
The shops remain open, according to Albert Heijn. Till systems are working and the nationwide Bonus offers from this week’s leaflet are valid. Electronic shelf labels may still show prices for promotions from last week. Customers may therefore see a different price from the one charged at the till.
The digital loyalty functions have also been temporarily disabled. These include the Mijn AH app, Mijn Bonus Box, Koopzegels and Air Miles. Albert Heijn says it intends to compensate customers if they miss out on personal discounts or other benefits because of the outage. The company is asking customers to keep their receipts.
Ahold Delhaize says protecting the data of customers, employees and partners is its priority. The public statement does not say that personal data have been stolen, nor that ransomware is involved. It is therefore too early to describe the outage as a confirmed data theft or cyberattack.
No restoration time has yet been announced. The response shows how heavily the supermarket chains rely on interconnected digital systems for logistics, loyalty programmes and customer contact. For customers, the physical shop remains the main option for now; for delivery, personalised offers and loyalty schemes, they must await further information from the company.
One story, several perspectives
What is established
- Ahold Delhaize has taken Albert Heijn, Etos and Gall & Gall systems offline as a precaution.
- The shops and till systems remain open, but online ordering, customer services and various loyalty functions are unavailable.
- The company has not confirmed a cause, perpetrator or data theft.
Left
Arguments The continuity of essential customer services and the protection of personal data should take precedence over maximum efficiency and cost-cutting. Large platform companies should be required to report quickly and fully on the societal consequences of digital incidents.
Values Consumer protection, transparency and public oversight.
Consequences More oversight and investment in redundant systems could limit outages, but would also increase costs for companies and potentially consumers.
Centre
Arguments A phased approach is defensible as long as Ahold Delhaize communicates clearly, involves independent experts and only restarts services when it is safe to do so. The government should mainly set requirements for notifications, recovery plans and the protection of vital supply chains.
Values Proportionality, reliability and institutional responsibility.
Consequences This could produce a careful recovery without immediately imposing new, broad rules.
Right
Arguments A company should have room to make technical decisions quickly on its own and should not be forced by public pressure to share unconfirmed details. The priority should be securing systems and resuming trading; liability should follow once the facts have been established.
Values Ownership, entrepreneurial freedom and order.
Consequences Less early disclosure may facilitate recovery, but could leave customers in uncertainty for longer.
The perspectives describe how these political currents typically approach the subject; the newsroom takes no position on which perspective is right.
